Tolls in Greece: Guide for Drivers and Tourists

How you are charged

You pay at each barrier as you pass it. There is no vignette or windscreen sticker to buy at the border or the airport, and no penalty for arriving without one.

Most barriers sit across the carriageway, so you pay a fixed amount to pass. Some junctions have ramp tolls instead, which you pay only if you join or leave there. The calculator tells the two apart and charges a ramp only when your route uses it.

Paying

Every barrier takes cards, contactless and euro cash. Transponder lanes are signed and are not for cars without a device.

Vehicle categories

Four categories, the same across the network. Height is measured at the first axle, so anything over 2.20 m falls into category 3. Roof boxes and taller rental vans often cross that line.

Over 2.20 mTwo or three-axle vehicles 2.20 m and over: campers, tall vans, minibuses, a car towing a trailer.

Transponders and e-pass

Each operator issues its own transponder, and the devices work across the network. For a few days' driving they are rarely worth it. Terms, deposits and discounts vary by company and change, so the official pages are linked from the price list.

Rental cars

A hire car has no separate toll tariff. It pays what any vehicle of its category pays. If it comes with a transponder, the billing and any daily fee are set by the rental company. Ask at the desk and keep the receipts.

Who runs which motorway

The network is split between 9 operators, each with its own tariff. A drive from Athens to Thessaloniki pays several of them; you change company mid-route without noticing. Each is listed below with its official price page.
